FRANCESCO SCAVULLO- CELEBRITY PORTRAITS

Herakleidon Museum, having the exclusive rights for Greece from the Scavullo foundation and in collaboration with Motion Picture Group Inc. presented an exhibition about the famous New Yorker Photographer Francesco Scavullo. It was the first official tribute to the great artist organized in our country, in the city of Athens. About 90 photos-portraits of celebrities were presented, in which he sculptural qualities of beauty and character of people were depicted.

Recognized as one of America’s greatest photographers and portraitists, Scavullo has captured on film some of the most famous personalities of the 20th century. As famous as the people he photographed, Scavullo has more than 50 years, captured celebrities from all occupations professional activities. This eclectic mix of people includes emerging and established stars in the fields of fashion, beauty, music, cinema, theater, sports, etc.

His photos graced the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, Life, etc.

Francesco Scavullo

He was born in Staten Island on January 16 in 1929. At the age of six, his family moved to Manhattan, where his father had purchased an elegant dining club. His father’s dream was Scavullo to succeed in his business. Fascinated by images of beauty, young Scavullo’s interests included also window-shopping in Fifth Avenue and reading his mother’s fashion magazines. The promising young photographer began by taking snapshots with his father’s camera, using his sisters as models. After graduating from high school, he found a job in a fashion catalog- production studio. Soon, he moved in Vogue magazine where his distinguished career started. He worked until the end of his life. Until then, his passion about photography and his artistic prowess remained strong. Scavullo died on January 6 2004, in New York.
